In order to develop your skin care program, it is necessary to determine you correct skin type. Skin types are classified into three five categories, that being dry, oily, combination (both dry and oily in specific areas) and normal.
Below is a simple test to determine your skin type.
Wash your face with a cleanser and wait one hour. After an hour, note which of the areas feel tight
Grab some tissue paper and pat a separate piece of tissue onto each area of your face (center and outer cheeks, center and outer forehead, and around the nose).
Examine each tissue carefully. If there is an oily residue on all the tissues, it would indicate an oily skin type.
Dry, flaky residue would indicate a dry skin type.
Additionally, if there is oily residue on only some tissues such as the center of the forehead, nose, chin and center of cheeks, known as the T-zone, it would indicate a combination skin type.
Normal skin would be indicated by no residue on any of the tissues.
The size of the pores on you skin are also indicative of skin types. Small pores generally indicate a dry skin type, while large pores indicate an oily skin type.
Additionally, there are many factors that affect your skin such as weather, emotions, hormones and stress. These factors may cause your skin type to fluctuate from time to time. For instance, those people living in a winter climate may experience a dryer skin type during the winter season.
Determining your skin type is the first step to caring for your skin. It is necessary to know your skin type so that you may select products that are best suited just for you.
