Hair loss is a common problem among men and women. About 25 percent of men begin balding by age 30 and two-thirds begin losing hair by age 60, according to the American Medical Association.
A number of things can cause excessive hair loss. Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss. Additionally, a overactive or under active thyroid gland may result in hair loss. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment of the thyroid disease.
While dandruff does not cause hair loss, it is the scratching of the scalp that weakens the structure of the hair thus causing hair loss. Dandruff is caused by a fungus known as malazzesia globosa. This is a form of yeast that feeds on the oil of the scalp. The fungus produces acid as a by-product, which in turn irritates the skin and causes it to flake. It is important to actually check the scalp as psoriasis will also cause a flaky scalp. However, psoriases will produce a redress on the scalp whereas dandruff does not.
The most effective dandruff shampoos and conditioners contain zinc pyrithione. Zinc Pyrithion leaves behind a thin plate-like piece of medicine on the scalp to prevent growth of the fungus, malazzesia globosa, thus acting as a preventive measure for both dandruff and hair loss.
If you suffer from dandruff invest in the proper dandruff shampoo and consider herbal treatments. Herbs that will treat dandruff are: Rosemary, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Tea Tree Oil and Basil. Check out the Hair Care Recipes page to get some dandruff recipes and oily hair care recipes.
Note: Essential oils are powerful and most need to be mixed with carrier oil or other ingredients.
