Brown (Sun, Age) Spots and Freckles: Causes and Treatments

Brown spots, (as known as sun spots or age spots) freckles, and bluish/black birthmarks are produced from an excess amount of melanin being released into the skin. Melanin is produced by the body to absorb UV rays from the sun and prevent the rays from penetrating deep into the skin layers, thus the appearance of age spots.

Freckles (ephelides) are more common in fair skinned people. Freckles are flat, circular small spots that appear after exposure to sunlight. They vary in color from red, yellow, and tan, to light brown or black. In addition, freckles will fade or completely dissipate when exposure to sun is reduced or eliminated. Furthermore, both men and women get freckles at equal rates.

Age spots, also known as sun spots or brown spots, (lentigines) appear later in life and on any skin type. They are small tan, brown or black spots which tend to be darker than a freckle. Age spots are caused by over-exposure to the sun and are considered a sign of sun damage to the skin. They appear on the back of the hands neck and face, usually appearing in people 40 years of age and older. Unlike freckles age spots do not fade when sun exposure is eliminated or reduced.

Another factor for skin discoloration is hormones and health conditions. An overactive thyroid, metabolism disorders or poor liver function, will affect skin tone. If this is the case, you need to seek a medical professional to improve skin appearance.

Freckles and age spots are produced on the outer layer of the skin and therefore can be treated with skin lightening products. There are many products on the market today that can effectively treat skin discoloration. In addition, there are numerous home remedies that you can try. Below are a few skin lightening recipes that you can try at home:
