Rosacea
Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects the face.  The signs are a persistent redness that covers the forehead, chin, checks and lower nose area.  Ironically, these are the areas of the face where blushing would occur.  The redness is caused by tiny blood vessels that enlarge and thus become visible through the skin.  Many times, Rosacea is mistaken for acne because most often than not pimples will occur with an outbreak.

Rosacea is usually found in adults between the ages of 30 and 50, and those people with fair skin.  In addition, it is common in both men and women although men tend to have a more sever outbreaks.  Unlike acne, an outbreak of Rosacea does not produce blackheads for whiteheads.

What causes Rosacea is unknown.  However, it more common in people that have a fair complexion and tend to blush.  Additionally, hormones, emotional state, embarrassment, and weather can cause flare-ups.  Sun exposure usually aggravates the symptoms of Rosacea.

Rosacea is usually treated with antibiotics, orally with tetracycline and/or topical creams, such as metronidazole (Metrocream) (useful to reduce the inflammation and the redness). Other topical antibiotic creams include erythomycin and clindamycin (Cleocin).   Short term treatments can include creams with cortisone, however a strong cortisone cream will have a reverse affect and widen the blood vessels even further.

Reducing the outbreaks of rosacea can be controlled by avoiding certain foods, liquids and avoiding extreme weather conditions.  For instance, foods that are spicy, and liquids that are hot, or contain alcohol, that would cause flushing should be avoided.   Exposure to sunlight or extreme hot and cold conditions should be avoided.  In addition, potent cortisone or steroid type creams should be avoided as indicated earlier they will widen the blood vessels and thus furthering the redness on your face.

Skin care for those suffering from Rosacea requires a gentle cleansing every morning, avoiding any grainy or abrasive type cleansers.  In addition, sunscreen should be applied and exposure to sunlight reduced.  Water-based sunscreens and makeup is recommended, and skin care products containing Aloe Vera and or Vitamin E provide a healing affect to the skin.
